The US Department of Defense (DoD) believes its emerging strategy to leverage 5G networking technologies is the first step towards an eventual goal of cementing US armed forces’ dominance in the future iterations of high speed, mobile communications, the Pentagon’s top research official has said.

The Pentagon’s plans to integrate 5G networks into everything from logistics management to battlefield awareness is not an effort by the department to develop its own militarised version of the networking technology, Michael Griffin, undersecretary of defense for research and engineering, said on 4 March. "What we're trying to do with 5G is help keep the DoD up to where the commercial telecom providers are eventually going to go,” he told attendees at the McAleese annual defence programmes conference, held in Washington, DC.
