US Africa Command (AFRICOM) has confirmed that three US nationals were killed during a 5 January attack US base at Manda Bay in northern Kenya by the Somali militant group Harakat al-Shabaab al-Mujahideen.
Al-Shabaab released a statement saying one of its elite units had attacked what it described as “the US naval base known as Camp Simba”, which it said “is home to hundreds of US military personnel and Kenyan soldiers and serves as one of the major launch pads for the American crusade against Islam in the region”.
