The United States escalated its confrontation with Tehran late on 2 January when President Donald Trump ordered an airstrike at Baghdad International Airport to kill Major General Qasem Soleimani, the head of the Qods Force: the external operations arm of Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps.

“At the direction of the president, the US military has taken decisive defensive action to protect US personnel abroad by killing Qasem Soleimani, the head of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps-Qods Force, a US-designated foreign terrorist organisation,” the US Department of Defense (DoD) said in a statement.

The statement did not say how the strike was carried out but it was reported that an unmanned aerial vehicle launched missiles at two vehicles at the airport, killing five members of the Iranian-backed Kataib Hizbullah group and two Iranian ‘guests’.
