US military entanglements in the Middle East are continuing to pull additional troops into the region, and Defense Secretary Mark Esper said even more could be deployed to counter Iranian activity and protect Washington’s interests.
On the final day of 2019, Esper announced he was deploying an infantry battalion from the 82nd Airborne Division, or approximately 750 additional troops, to Kuwait in the wake of recent attacks in Iraq. Senior military leaders are continuing to assess the situation on a “day-by-day” basis to determine if even more troops are needed, but “so far” only this one additional battalion will deploy, Esper told reporters during a 2 January press conference.
