Multi-billion-pound projects to build new frigates and hundreds of armoured vehicles for the UK armed forces will now have to wait for final sign-off until after the country's general election on 12 December.
Ministry of Defence (MoD) officials and ministers had indicated that projects to buy Type 31e General Purpose Frigates and Boxer Mechanised Infantry Vehicles would move to contract award by mid-December but this has now been put on hold.
Rules preventing government contract award announcements during UK election campaign periods, known as 'purdah', are expected to kick in on 5 November after the parliamentary bill calling the election became law on 31 October.
