The vessel, which was launched by Albina Machine and Engine Works in Portland, United States, in 1944, was retired in a decommissioning ceremony on 1 October after 71 years of service in the Philippines.

Cebu ’s decommission has come months after the retirement of another PCE 827-class ship, Sultan Kudarat , which was taken out of service in April 2019.

Prior to it being commissioned by the Philippine Navy in 1948, Cebu was operated by the US Navy (USN) as a patrol and escort vessel known as USS PCE-881.
