The large military parade held on 1 October in Beijing to mark the 70th anniversary of the founding of People's Republic of China showcased a number of new land platforms that reflect growing needs within the People's Liberation Army Ground Force (PLAGF) for improved mountain warfare capabilities.

The parade came more than two yeas after border tensions between India and China had escalated rapidly on the Doklam plateau in the Himalayas. Around that time - July 2017 - the Chinese military had sought to construct a road in a disputed region at the 'tri-junction' between Bhutan, China, and India, in an area contested by Bhutan and China that would have enabled Chinese access to the Indian border.
