Kongsberg has diversified its defence and aerospace portfolio with the launch of its first naval ship concept.
Designed to perform a wide range of missions in coastal waters, the new Vanguard multirole vessel has been developed in partnership with Norwegian-based commercial ship design group Salt Ship Design. The partnership has sought to leverage Kongsberg’s naval technology and systems integration expertise, and Salt’s pedigree in ship design for the marine offshore sector.
Speaking in Oslo on 26 September, Eirik Lie, president of Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace (KDA), said the Vanguard concept was intended to fill a niche for a low-cost littoral military ship capable of carrying out a range of roles that would be traditionally carried out by several different ship classes.
