In its 2019 National Defense Report Taiwan's Ministry of National Defense (MND) has emphasised its support for the US Indo-Pacific strategy and its security co-operation with Australia, Japan, the Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, and Thailand amid threats from Beijing that the island "must and will be reunited" with mainland China.

Published on 11 September, the report also focuses Taipei's assessment of the security environment along with the MND's defence strategies and programmes to deliver to its armed forces the equipment required to meet the growing challenges ahead.

Recent events have highlighted the pressures faced by Taiwan. In its latest Defence White Paper published on 24 July, China reasserted its position that Taiwan "must and will be reunited" with the mainland, stating, "We make no promise to renounce the use of force and reserve the option of taking all necessary measures."
