Rheinmetall and MBDA Deutschland announced in a press release on 8 August that they would co-operate in the development of a high-energy laser (HEL) for the German Navy. The two companies agreed to build, integrate, and test a laser demonstrator for the German Navy’s K130 corvette.

The companies said that a laser demonstrator would be tested for the first time under near-operational conditions on board a German corvette.

Rheinmetall and MBDA said they are awaiting the release of the performance specifications by the Bundesamt für Ausrüstung, Informationstechnik und Nutzung der Bundeswehr (BAAINBw), Germany’s Federal Office for Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-service Support, before determining the details and division of labour.
