The Newport News Shipbuilding shipyard of Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII) is on track for major milestones for both Ford- and Nimitz-class carriers, according to Michael Petters, HII CEO.

Petters noted the turnaround by the Trump Administration to proceed with refueling and complex overhaul (RCOH) of the Nimitz-class carrier USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75).

An RCOH is an extremely complex engineering and construction project that involves more than 680 suppliers from 40 states providing material and services critical to the overhaul process. Once completed, a recapitalised carrier is capable of operating for another 25 years.

Earlier this year, the US Navy (USN) had released a budget request that would have led to the cancellation of the RCOH and early retirement of Truman .
