UK Evaluates Flywheel Energy Storage System in Power-Hardware-In-The-Loop Testing

The UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) and the Power Networks Demonstration Centre (PNDC) at the University of Strathclyde have completed testing and evaluation of a novel Flywheel Energy Storage System (FESS) in a representative ship power system environment.

This follows prior testing of the 3.6 MJ/360 kW FESS system at Florida State University’s (FSU) Center for Advanced Power Systems (CAPS) facility. Both PNDC and FSU CAPS have utilised a power hardware-in-the-loop (PHIL) approach where the FESS was integrated into a virtual ship power system emulating a Royal Navy ship operating in real time.

Developed by GKN under contract to the MoD’s Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl), the FESS uses innovative high-speed and lightweight flywheels to generate high-power electrical pulses that future shipborne laser directed energy weapons (LDEWs) will require.
