Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's newly elected Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government has appointed Rajnath Singh as the country's new defence minister.
Singh, who succeeds Nirmala Sitharaman, was India's home minister in the outgoing BJP administration and is now the South Asian country's fifth defence minister in as many years.
Shripad Naik will assist Singh as minister of state for defence.
Singh will remain an ex-officio member of the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS), headed by Modi, which he also attended during his tenure as home minister. The CCS is the final decision-making body on all Indian national security matters.
