The Japan Ministry of Defense's (MoD's) Acquisition, Technology & Logistics Agency (ATLA) announced on 10 May that it awarded a contract extension to Mitsubishi Electric Corporation (Melco) for the development of a ship-launched surface-to-air missile (SAM) system based on the Type-03 SAM system.

The contract extension, which is worth JPY10 billion (USD91.2 million), was signed on 29 March and follows a contract awarded in March 2018 worth JPY8.8 billion.

The SAM system being developed by Melco is expected to have a "stand-off defence capability" that will enhance the ability of Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) frigates and destroyers to also defend themselves against air-launched anti-ship missiles.
