Australian ammunition specialist NIOA has commenced manufacturing activity at the Australian state-owned munitions facility in Benalla, Victoria, the company said.

In a press release on 14 May, it said its initial project at the facility is a joint programme with Saab to produce 84 mm ammunition for the Swedish company’s Carl Gustav rifles, operated by the Australian Defence Force (ADF).

NIOA is headquartered near Brisbane but has set up tenancy at the munitions plant in Benalla under an arrangement with the government through which it acquired 300 acres of land adjacent to an existing munitions plant operated by Thales Australia.
