The Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) announced on 10 May that it awarded a USD29 million contract to Macdonald, Dettwiler, and Associates (MDA) to design, build, and deliver 10 search-and-rescue (SAR) repeaters for the country's Medium Earth Orbit Search and Rescue (MEOSAR) system.

The repeaters will be hosted on the US Air Force's (USAF's) next-generation Global Positioning System III (GPS III) position, navigation, and timing (PNT) constellation. A repeater detects signals from distress beacons across the country and along Canada's coastlines and relays them to a ground station.

The MEOSAR system is expected to deliver improved response times for SAR activities and increase accuracy to locate people, ships, or aircraft in distress, according to a CAF statement.
