Following a launch milestone in December 2018, construction work on the third and final Zumwalt-class destroyer is now 85 per cent complete, according to Captain Kevin Smith, the DDG 1000 programme manager at Program Executive Officer Ships.

Briefing reporters at the Navy League's Sea Air Space exposition in National Harbor, Maryland, Capt Smith said the future USS Lyndon B Johnson (DDG 1002), which was officially christened on 27 April, is currently going through the final stages of ship completion, with work including running the rest of the cables and finishing off the compartment spaces.

"Then we're getting into the activation - that's what we have ahead of us," he said.
