The Brazilian defence minister retired army general Fernando Azevedo e Silva, has asked the country’s top military chiefs to apply a new “freeze” to the defence budget for the remaining period of the year.

The money remains in the government’s budget but is locked down as “contingency funds” that can be spent only if the economy improves or new sources of revenue are found.

The request was announced on 7 May following a meeting at the army headquarters of the Armed Forces High Command in Brasília, which included the army commander, General Edson Leal Pujol; the air force chief, Lieutenant-Brigadier Antonio Carlos Moretti Bermudez; and the commander of the navy, Admiral Ilques Barbosa Junior.
