Development of the Columbia-class next-generation strategic deterrent submarine remains on schedule as detail design work nears completion and advance construction work begins, according to Captain Jon Rucker, programme manager for the Columbia class.

Speaking at the Navy League's annual Sea-Air-Space exposition on 8 May, Capt Rucker said the programme was largely keeping pace with an aggressive schedule that would see the start of construction on the lead ship on 1 October 2020.

"We have to have that first boat out on patrol no later than October 2030, and I'm telling you today that we are planning to beat that; we are doing everything we can to get ahead of schedule," he said.
