Russia’s Northern Fleet will receive 368 new weapon systems in 2019, Defence Minister Sergey Shoigu told the Ministry of Defence (MoD) in a board meeting on 26 April.
This will increase the proportion of modern equipment in service with the fleet to 59%, the minister said.
According to Shoigu, the MoD is continuing to build infrastructure in the north. “The first modular military town in Tiksi is being handed over to the armed forces. Once all infrastructure has been built, a newly activated Northern Fleet air defence unit will be stationed there,” he said.
The Northern Fleet is also ramping up training.
