The Russian military is planning to renovate 106 airfields by 2028, according to Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu.

In a board meeting on 26 April, Shoigu told the Ministry of Defence (MoD) that “further development of the armed forces’ airfield network will support more effective and safer employment of aviation”.

He said his department intends to repair 13 million m 2 of runway surface and build 700 air traffic control, power, and aircraft servicing facilities, and other associated infrastructure, the Interfax military news agency reported.

The 13 million m 2 of resurfacing would amount to a little more than 100 2,500 m runways.
