The Afghan National Defense and Security Forces (ANDSF) suffered 31% more casualties between 1 December 2018 and 28 February 2019 than during the same period one year prior, John Sopko, the US Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction (SIGAR), said in his latest quarterly report released on 1 May.

Almost half of these casualties were inflicted during checkpoint security operations, said Sopko, adding that the number of ANDSF casualties incurred from defensive operations increased by 45% while those from offensive operations by 21%.

In his report the SIGAR stated that the latest ANDSF casualty figures, along with a rise in enemy-initiated attacks and other security-related incidents, showed that Afghanistan “experienced heightened insecurity over the winter months”.
